The Nikon MD-4 motor drive is designed for use with the F3 series of cameras for rapid advance of the film and arming of the shutter. It is meant to be the companion piece to the F3 and in the 1980s it was uncommon to see an F3 without its MD-4. When attached to the Nikon F3, the MD-4 allows motorized winding and rewinding of the film. In normal operation, the MD-4 provided up to 5.5 fps, but if the mirror of the camera was locked up, the MD-4 could reach 6 fps. The MD-4 is able to rewind a roll of 36 exposure film in 4.5 seconds. It also can provide power to the F3 itself in the event the battery within the F3 dies. Last but not least, the MD-4 also provided an additional grip for the camera complete with shutter release button. A rotating collar around this button allows the user to either lock the shutter release or switch between single and continuous advance modes.
The Nikon MD-4 requires eight AA batteries for power.
